Tech: Alphabetic vs. championship ordering of teams

Postby Veedub » Wed Jul 26, 2017 12:21 pm

There are a number of items in the game logic/data/files that are either ordered by the alphabetic order of the team names or by the result of the 1997 Constructors' Championship. The following tables can be used as references if a mapping between the two ordering methods is required.

Alphabetic ordering itself may not need to be considered when modding the game but you must treat the position of the team the same. For example, if Toyota are a direct replacement for Arrows, then you must replace those Arrows resources positioned alphabetically, and replace those Arrows resources that are positioned by championship order.

The alphabetic order is likely a result of the way the game was developed and written, and may not cause any issues if the correct ordering is not retained. For example, it should not cause an issue that Toyota (or "T") is now out of alphabetical order. Any likely effect will be seen when sorting a grid control inside the game.

Understanding the ordering will help explain why Arrows, Diniz, Salo and Collard, or even their sponsors are often seen at the top of game logic/data/files. You could change from alphabetic to championship order providing the associated indexing/logic is corrected to suit.

The tables below are indexed from 0 to 10, rather than 1 to 11.

Code: Select all
Alphabetic order:
 0 <>  7 - Arrows
 1 <>  2 - Benetton
 2 <>  1 - Ferrari
 3 <>  4 - Jordan
 4 <>  3 - McLaren
 5 <> 10 - Minardi
 6 <>  5 - Prost
 7 <>  6 - Sauber
 8 <>  8 - Stewart
 9 <>  9 - Tyrrell
10 <>  0 - Williams

Code: Select all
Championship order:
 0 <> 10 - Williams
 1 <>  2 - Ferrari
 2 <>  1 - Benetton
 3 <>  4 - McLaren
 4 <>  3 - Jordan
 5 <>  6 - Prost
 6 <>  7 - Sauber
 7 <>  0 - Arrows
 8 <>  8 - Stewart
 9 <>  9 - Tyrrell
10 <>  5 - Minardi

EDITOR: In some cases, there will be changes to move from alphabetical to championship order (with the associated underlying index/reference changes) for certain sets of data. An example of this is with the revised commentary files, reassigning driver indices to be ordered in championship order rather than alphabetical order.
There is no limit to what a man can do so long as he does not care a straw who gets the credit for it.
